Center for the Unification of Science and Consciousness (CUSAC)

Solving The Hard Problem

The Center for the Unification of Science and Consciousness (CUSAC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2018 by Tom Campbell, a former NASA and Department of Defense physicist. Its mission is to solve the hard problem of consciousness : why and how humans and other organisms have qualia, phenomenal consciousness, or subjective experience.

The Challenge

Advances in AI, VR, Biotech and Quantum technology are advancing fastyet we still have no scientific understanding of Consciousness.

A true scientific breakthrough in consciousness could unlock:

The Solution

Drive the next paradigm shift in science, expanding our understanding of reality to fully integrate and explain consciousness.

Generate Empirical
Data At Scale

To explore connections between consciousness and physical reality.

Develop A
Scientific Theory

To explain rigorously the
new empirical data.

Make It Sexy And Viral
On Social Media

To generate more interest,
research and applications

Our projects

Our practical, data-driven projects generate empirical evidence to fuel groundbreaking theories. Leveraging scale and virality, we maximize impact and accelerate momentum in the field.

Quantum Experiments

Following the  peer-reviewed publication On Testing the Simulation Theory in the International Journal of Quantum Foundations (2017) and a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2018, we have raised over $236,000 to fund experiments to test the Simulation Hypothesis. A first set of delayed choice quantum eraser type experiments have been completed. Read updates here.

Extended Perception Experiments

Thousands of people worldwide are displaying the ability of Mindsight—seeing without physical eyes. Building on Alex Gomez-Marin’s award-winning research (Linda G. O’Bryant Noetic Sciences Research Prize), we are conducting rigorous, controlled, double-blind experiments (N=10) to validate or challenge this phenomenon, with results set for peer-reviewed publication. Next, we will collaborate with Mindsight communities to develop an interactive mobile app for training, practice, and data sharing, expanding research to over 10,000 participants through social media.

Mind-Matter Interactions Experiments

We’re collaborating with Entangled to explore whether player intentions can influence quantum randomness in video games. By integrating a Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) into popular reward based-video games, we replace traditional pseudo-randomness and analyze its impact on loot drops and player outcomes. This approach allows to reproduce Dean Radin's and PEAR Lab's style experiments (generally with small N) into an unprecedented large-scale (N > 1M), while using the rigorous Advanced Meta-Experimental (AMP) Protocol.

The Conscious AI Prize

We are organizing a global essay contest and symposium with $1M+ in prizes to tackle the hard problem of consciousness, qualia, and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Winning essays unlock cash awards and research fellowships to fund paradigm-shifting work, driving breakthroughs in neuroscience, philosophy, and AI, and allowing to better navigate in the landscape of consciousness theories.
